Mold removal & mold remediation is the process of removal and/or cleanup of mold from an indoor environment.

Mold growth can be removed from hard surfaces with soap and water, antimicrobial, biocides, disinfectants, or a bleach solution of no more than 1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water. In a residential setting, hard surfaces may include non-porous tile, countertops, cabinets, or cement. Often times, however, mold spores grow and thrive on porous or semi-porous material (drywall, wood framing, etc.). Because of this, a Certified Mold Remediation Contractor should a) contain, b) remove and c) replace the affected material.

Applications of antimicrobial, encapsulation, negative air, ETC, by themselves DO NOT represent a complete remediation.

The ONLY way to properly remediate mold is to physically remove it.

The first step in solving an indoor mold problem is stopping the source of moisture. If we eliminate the moisture we stop the mold from growing. Much like your grass in your front yard in the winter time – mold will go into a dormant state once any possible moisture sources have been removed.

Next step in the remediation process is to physically remove the mold growth. A conservative strategy is to discard any building materials saturated by the water intrusion or having visible mold growth. This approach could obviously be a very expensive option – United Fire & Water has some other options for your mold remediation needs.

One of our primary goals in Mold Remediation & Mold Removal is to remove or clean contaminated materials in a way that prevents the emission of fungi and dust contaminated with fungi from leaving a work area and entering an occupied or non-abatement area.

CROSS CONTAMINATION is something that is preventable, and should be considered in every remediation project.

The purpose of the clean-up process is to eliminate the mold and fungal growth and to remove contaminated materials. As a general rule, simply killing the mold with a biocide is not enough. The mold must be removed since the chemicals and proteins, which cause a reaction in humans, are still present even in dead mold.

Some different methods of remediation:

  • Wet Vacuum
  • HEPA Vacuum
  • Truck Mounted Cleaning – where the mold is removed from the house in the vacuum process
  • Wet wipe
  • Sanding With HEPA Vac attached
  • Media Blasting – Sand, Soda, Walnut Shell, Shot, Dry Ice

Remember that once the structure has been remediated we need to make sure that the air space within the affected area is clean as well.
