The town of Independence, Louisiana was originally known as Uncle Sam. The town is in Tangipahoa Parish, hLouisiana. As of 2010, the population of the town was 1665 people. It is a part of the Hammond microPolitan statistical area. The elevation of the town is 89 feet above sea level and the racial composition is split pretty evenly. 47.77% of the population is white and 46.97% of the population is black or African-American. Still on the side of the population of the town has been steadily decreasing throughout the past century. The highest population the town has ever seen was in 1960 with 1941 residents.
