Check Your Rain Gutters
Rain gutters play an important role in keeping your home and property safe from
water damage. By directing water away from your home, gutters help prevent water from pooling near your home’s foundation, windows, and doors. If rain gutters are clogged by debris, water will build up and can cause seepage, leaks, and costly damage to your roof, exterior walls, and foundation. Regularly clean out your rain gutters, make sure they are not bent or dented, and check that they are directing water away from your home.
Check the Grading Around Your Home
The ground around your house should be graded away from the foundation. Within 10 feet around your foundation, you should slope the ground at least 6 inches away. If your ground needs increased grading, you can add dense soil to achieve the proper grading. Without correct grading, water will run towards the foundation and pool there.
Check Your Roof
Inspect your roof at least once a year to be sure it is in good condition. The roof is your home’s first line of defense against the elements, so you need to be sure it is taken care of so it can protect your home from water damage. Broken, loose, or missing tiles could cause water to leak inside your attic or trickle down the sides of your home instead of into the gutters. Keeping your roof maintained will greatly decrease the risk of water flooding your foundation.
Check the Seals Around Doors and Windows
Any openings into your home, like doors and windows, are potential areas where rainwater can get inside. If caulking around windows or doors is cracked or chipped, re-caulk them so that the seal is strong. If there is a gap along the bottom of your exterior doors you can add weather strips that not only keep water out, but will help keep cold areas in when you are running your AC during the hot summer months. Making sure that water is not able to leak inside through your doors or windows will help reduce the risk of water damage from rain.
